State electoral districts in Bayside see changes ahead of the election

Boundaries are redrawn every four years. Could they tip the balance in 2023?

New electoral boundaries are in place for the NSW State election on Saturday 25 March 2023. This means that even if your address hasn't changed, you might be voting in a new electoral district.

The electoral district boundaries in NSW are decided by a redistribution process before each election. This ensures a similar number of people are represented in each district, with a 10% difference in the average allowed.

Each of the state districts that are represented in Bayside — Maroubra, Heffron, Rockdale and Kogarah — have seen changes. See how you are impacted below.

Maroubra

The incumbent Michael Daley has held this safe Labor seat since succeeding former Premier Bob Carr in 2005.

The Maroubra electorate has gained part of the Liberal-voting suburb of South Coogee from the electoral district of Coogee, nudging the Labor margin in Maroubra down from 8.5% to an estimated 8.3%.

The declared candidates for the 2023 election are Michael Daley (Labor), Bill Burst (Liberal Party) and Holly Williamson (Animal Justice Party).

Heffron

Heffron is another safe Labor seat, held by Ron Hoenig since succeeding Kristina Keneally in 2012.

The district has lost part of the suburbs of Kensington, Kingsford and Randwick to the electoral district of Coogee, and the suburbs of Centennial Park and Moore Park to the electoral district of Sydney.

The Heffron and Newtown electorates have swapped a few voters, with Heffron gaining about 1,000 voters from Waterloo, but losing the suburb of Erskineville and part of the suburb of Alexandria.

The Labor margin edges up from 15.1% to an estimated 15.3%.

The declared candidates for the 2023 election are Ron Hoenig (Labor), Philipa Veitch (Greens), Rachel Evans (Socialist Alliance), Sonia Kilham (Independent) and Linda Paull (Animal Justice Party).

Rockdale

Rockdale is a safe Labor seat held by Steve Kamper since 2015.

Rockdale loses around 1,600 voters from Liberal-leaning suburb of Kogarah Bay to the electorate of Kogarah, slightly lifting the Labor margin for Rockdale from 9.5% to about 10%.

The declared candidates for the 2023 election are Steve Kamper (Labor) and Peter Strong (Greens).

Kogarah

The marginal seat of Kogarah has been held by Labor Party Leader Chris Minns since 2015.

Parts of Blakehurst and Kyle Bay have been transferred from the electoral district of Oatley. The district has also gained part of the suburb of Kogarah Bay from the electoral district of Rockdale.

On the new boundaries it becomes the state’s most marginal seat, with the margin reducing from 1.8% to an estimated 0.1%, based on the 2019 vote. However, the Liberal Party has not yet declared a candidate for the 2023 election.

The declared candidates for the 2023 election are Chris Minns (Labor), Tracy Yuen (Greens) and Troy Stolz (Independent).
